About the Designer

Professor Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) is one of the great personalities of Finnish glass, whose imaginative, rich and bold glass art deviates from the mainstream of Nordic design. Toikka, who graduated as a ceramist from an art school in 1956, worked as a designer in Arabia until 1959, after which he moved to Sodankyl as a visual art teacher. He started his work as a permanent designer in Nuutajrvi in 1963 and since then worked with glass, designing his series of Art Glass Birds, as well as numerous popular glass patterns, including Kastehelmi and Flora.
